Library awarded Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure Grant!

The Monona Public Library is proud to announce that the Library is a recipient of a 2010 Madison Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure Grant of $5,000 which will fund more materials on Breast Cancer treatment and prevention for our newly established Health & Wellness Collection.

We will include topics on nutrition, wellness, and cancer prevention and disease management and we also have funds to host several programs this year to generate interest in the topic and in our new health collection! In the discussion and debate about health insurance in this country, we are proud that our library is playing an active role in keeping the public informed with the best information about health issues that we can provide. The Library will announce our upcoming programs soon.

The Library would like to thank the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure for its generosity.

Tax (Form) Season @ the Library

Now that Groundhog Day has come and gone, the April 15 deadline for filing annual income taxes looms ever closer.  At the Library, we have copies of common Federal and Wisconsin state income tax forms in our café on the lower level.

Many of our patrons have noted that we don’t offer as many copies as we have in the past.   Last year, even after ordering about half of the previous year’s total number of forms, we still ended up recycling several boxes of unused forms.  Citizens are urged to  file their taxes electronically if possible, to save on paper and to receive their refunds more quickly.

But, if you need tax forms and we don’t have them on hand, you can still find them. On our homepage, we have links to the IRS and the Wisconsin Dept. of Revenue, where all forms are located and are available (including a direct link to the Homestead credit forms).  You may download or print their necessary forms, at the Library or at home (for free). We encourage patrons with home internet access to do this at home to avoid printing charges.

The state government is particularly keen that the public file electronically.  Last year, approximately one million state tax forms were delivered to public libraries in Wisconsin.  Of those one million forms, only 75,000 (7.5%) were actually returned to be filed by the Department of Revenue.  925,000 forms were, essentially, wasted.  (This count does not include the 600,000 instruction booklets sent out to libraries in addition to forms.)

Last year, 71% of state taxpayers filed electronically – and that should rise again this year.  All Wisconsin residents can file state taxes online for free at www.revenue.wi.gov with the e-file application.  Additionally, check the IRS website to see if you qualify for free online filing for Federal taxes.

If you need assistance in finding the form you need online, let our staff know at the Main Desk.  We plan on receiving paper copies of the most-common forms as long as they are available in future years, but do encourage folks who can e-file to try it this year.

Good luck!

A Brief Report on 2009…

If you’ve visited the Library in the last year or so, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been busier than ever before.  We’re really proud to report that we set a Library record in 2009 for the most items checked out in a year: 290,429 items to be exact. That’s up nearly 10% from our previous record,  set in 2008. We set monthly records eleven out of twelve months last year.

We also made some notable additions in 2009. We expanded our open hours, opening earlier weekday mornings and staying open later on Sunday afternoons.  We added a brand new Health & Wellness collection, thanks to funding from the Madison Community Foundation. Thanks to Monona Pie Party proceeds, we added an additional early literacy computer for children, and we painted the walls in our teen area and children’s bathroom. 755 local residents received new Library cards last year from our Library.

But we did a lot more than lend books and films to our patrons.  Over 7,700 people attended a Library program, ranging from Early Literacy classes for toddlers to Green Tuesday programs and film discussions for adults.  We had over 500 teenagers attend Library programs last year, including over 100 teens who flooded the Library over two December days for the Harry Potter Fest.

Our website had 94,033 visits. Our public computers logged 28,160 sessions.  People use our computers to check email, visit local news sites, search for jobs, create resumes and cover letters, and a whole lot more.  Last year, we began lending laptops for our patrons to use inside the building so that you could sit near the windows or by the fireplace while working.

In addition to regular Library business, our building serves as a public meeting space.  Over 9,300 people from Monona and beyond attended meetings in one of the Library’s three public meeting rooms.  We host City Council meetings, other City of Monona functions, plus local non-profits and community groups.

Finally, we’d like to mention the many people who donated to our Booked for Life endowment fund.  Fundraising is never easy, but it is particularly difficult in a recession.  Over 100 people from Monona and farther afield contributed to our fund, helping us to raise over $93,000 – no small achievement in a down economy. Special thanks go to the Monona Library Foundation, who spearheaded the effort, and to the Madison Community Foundation, who provided the match incentive.

It was a great year, certainly, but we won’t be resting on our laurels in 2010. We are planning to double the size of our Health & Wellness collection, greatly enhance our early literacy resources, and make several changes to the layout of the Library to make finding what you want easier. We invite you to share your ideas with us as we go! Patron communication forms are available at the main desk or email us at ask@mononalibrary.org.
